New President Aims To Make Mimos World-class R&D Centre:
KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 (Bernama) -- Newly appointed president and chief executive officer of Mimos Bhd, Abdul Wahab Abdullah, intends to turn Mimos, Malaysia's leading research and development (R&D) organisation in information and communications technology (ICT) and microelectronics into a world-class R&D centre.

Abdul Wahab said his first task was to assess the current state of affairs in Mimos for 90 days in order to evaluate and accelerate the organisation to its next level of growth.

"Our plan is to focus the entire organisation's activities on applied research, advanced technologies and development," he said during a media briefing Thursday.

"Under the Ninth Malaysian Plan, the government has allocated RM12.8 billion, of which RM474 million is for ICT. Mimos is part of the RM474 million allocation," Abdul Wahab said.

He said the allocation will include investment in technology and retaining as well as recruiting key talents for the organisation.

On to the proposal to dispose Jaring, the Internet service provider for Mimos, Abdul Wahab said the plan has been in place.

"However, no party has been identified yet as the potential buyer," he said.

Abdul Wahab was previously senior director of R&D operations in Motorola Technology Sdn Bhd's global technology development group.
