Google Developer Day
On May 31st, we held the first Google Developer Day around the world. More than 5,000 software developers gathered in San Jose, London, Paris, Madrid, Hamburg, Moscow, Beijing, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, and Sydney. These software pros use Google products to build websites and programs for consumers and businesses -- such as software applications that sync Google Calendar and other calendar programs, or real estate sites that display listings on top of Google Maps. In addition to free food, these software engineers spent the day leading technical sessions on how to build great products using Google services.

It seems you can hardly turn around lately without getting some news about climate change, sustainability, and environmentalism in general. If you want to get involved, there are countless programs, products and efforts you can undertake as an individual, from recycling or biking to work to buying a hybrid car or low-flow toilet. And there are plenty of things businesses can do too. As a global employer, Google is engaged with several initiatives. These include:
- solar power: we recently completed what may currently be the largest corporate solar installation in the U.S. at our Mountain View, California campus. With this in place, we hope to offset about 30% of our peak-hour output.

1. Opeth
Not only are they the best band in Sweden, Opeth ranks right up there in the entire metal genre. They are an extremely diverse group, mixing death metal with many other styles, and even using acoustic instruments in some of their songs. The vocals are also diverse, and the lyrics are exceptional.

2. In Flames
Even with multiple lineup changes In Flames continues to be at the top of the death metal genre. Mixing death metal growls with clean singing, they have a wide appeal that grows with each release.

3. Dark Tranquillity
Dark Tranquillity, formed in 1989, were another band at the beginning of the melodic death metal movement. And unlike some groups whose time in the sun has come and gone, Dark Tranquility continues to progress and release great albums.

4. Evergrey
In a country where melodic death metal reigns supreme, it may seem like an unusual choice to rank a progressive metal group like Evergrey so highly. But when you factor in their extraordinary musical ability and great songwriting, it's an easy choice. Tom S. Englund has one of the best voices in metal, and Evergrey are the complete package.

5. Soilwork
It may seem strange, but Soilwork has been accused of being "too commercial." Their style of melodic death metal is very palatable compared to some bands in the genre, but I doubt you'll be hearing any of their music on your local pop station anytime soon. They write really good songs and have a great mix of the brutal and the melodic.
Recommended album: The Chainheart Machine (2000)
6. At The Gates
At The Gates were at the forefront of melodic death metal in the early '90s. Before disbanding in 1996 they recorded several influential and respected albums. Some of their members went on to form The Haunted.

7. Meshuggah
Meshuggah plays a really diverse form of metal that utilizes unusual time signatures and tempo changes combined with thrash and death metal elements and a lot of experimentation. They tend to be hit and miss, but when they're on, they are really good.

8. Amon Amarth
Originally called Scum, the death metal band Amon Amarth incorporates Viking imagery into their lyrics and a lot of melodic elements into their music.

9. Candlemass
Candlemass are one of the pioneers of doom metal. They've been doing it for 20 years, and original vocalist Messiah Marcolin has once again left the band.
Recommended album: Nightfall (1987)
10. Arch Enemy
Arch Enemy is unique in that they are a death metal band with a female vocalist. Angela Gossow screams with just as much fury as anyone else and after several years with the band has proven to be no novelty act.

Inmates cover hole with pancake batter:
SCOTT CITY, Missouri - Police said inmates used pancake batter and toothpaste to cover a hole they made to allow a female inmate to slide into the next cell and join a male inmate. Now steel plates are being added to the Missouri jail's interior walls.
The hole at the Scott City Jail was discovered this weekend, said police Chief Don Cobb. He said inmates removed a block from the wall, after making a digging tool with a nail, a wire from a light fixture and a toothbrush.
The mixture of pancake batter and toothpaste looked like mortar, he said.
Prisoners will stay in a county jail until a security check is completed at the city building.
The city jail's exterior walls already are reinforced with steel to prevent inmates from escaping, Cobb said.
"Unless they can smuggle in an arc welder, they aren't getting through that," he said.

A Japanese man who set a world record by wolfing down 53 hot dogs in 12 minutes has suffered a severe jaw injury due to his rigorous training, making his next title uncertain.
Takeru 'Tsunami' said he can only open his mouth to make a gap the size of a fingertip after being diagnosed with jaw arthritis.
The injury occurred only a week after the slender 29-year-old started training to win his sixth straight title at the annual July 4 Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating contest on New York's Coney Island. Link

A rare Beal's four-eyed turtle, named for two white spots on the back of its head that look like another pair of eyes, hatched from a clutch of three eggs, aquarium officials announced Friday.
"This little turtle in Chattanooga may represent the first successful reproduction of Sacalia bealei in a North American institution," aquarium herpetologist Enrico Walder said.
The baby turtle weighed only 6 grams and was 38 millimeters long when it hatched June 9.
There are only 18 known Beal's four-eyed turtles in the United States and Europe. The Dallas Zoo and the Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero, Calif., are the other two places in the U.S. with the turtles, aquarium officials said.
The turtles were once common in southern China, butd researchers believe their numbers will not grow large again because of their low reproductive rates.
"As with many Asian species the Beal's four-eyed turtle has been over collected for use in the Chinese food and traditional medicine trade," Walder said.
A male Beal's four-eyed turtle is currently on display at the aquarium, but the baby will not be exhibited until it is older.

19th Century Bomb Found In Whale
Part of a 19th century bomb has been found inside a whale.
The fragment is part of a time delay bomb that was introduced in 1879 and manufactured until 1885, reports the BBC.
It suggests the bowhead whale may have swum its first strokes not long after the American Civil War.
Scientists say it is rare to find a whale over 100 years old but believe some may reach 200. Link

Jason Griffith, 23, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was arrested on charges including reckless endangerment, terrorist threats and harassment.
Police allege he fired a single .40-calibre bullet into his wife's computer tower after a 2am argument in their bedroom, reports the Times Tribune. Link

'Net Addict' Kills Mum For Cybercafe Cash
A 16-year-old Chinese "Internet addict" stabbed his mother to death and then seriously injured his father after he was refused money to go to a cybercafe, state media reported Thursday.
The boy, identified only by his surname Wang, asked his mother for the money on Tuesday afternoon in their apartment in the southern city of Guangzhou, The Beijing News reported.
After she refused, he grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed her to death, it said. The mother's name was not given.
The boy's father Wang Jianjun then rushed into the home and was stabbed three times in the head by his son.
He was later rushed to hospital and reported to be in stable condition.
The boy fled the scene but was found early Wednesday morning by local police. Link

Purple fluorescent frog dicovered
A purple fluorescent frog of the genus Atelopus was discovered during a follow-up survey of the Nassau plateau in mid 2006 by Surinamese scientists Paul Ouboter and Jan Mol. The frog is one of 24 new species found in the South American highlands of Suriname, conservationists reported on June 4, 2007, warning that these creatures are threatened by illegal gold mining.

KUALA LUMPUR: Seorang ibu sanggup membiarkan empat anak perempuannya dirogol ayah dan tiga abang kandung sendiri termasuk menggunakan khidmat bomoh bagi memukau mereka supaya akur untuk menjadi pelacur sepenuh masa.
Difahamkan, selepas empat remaja itu ‘puas’ ditiduri ahli keluarga sendiri, mereka kemudian dipaksa melacurkan diri kepada saudara-mara termasuk warga asing sekitar Johor Bharu bagi mendapatkan habuan lumayan.
Selain itu, mereka dibelasah, didera dan dibomoh ibu sendiri jika enggan berbuat demikian dan menuruti kehendak ayah serta abang kandung yang bernafsu ‘binatang’ itu.
Seorang mangsa yang mahu dikenali sebagai Wani, 19, berkata dia mula diperkosa sejak tujuh tahun lalu, iaitu selepas tamat sesi pembelajaran sekolah rendah di Ulu Tiram, Johor.
“Bagaimanapun, ketika remaja lain sibuk memikirkan soal persekolahan akan datang, kami diarah ibu ‘meniduri’ ayah serta tiga abang kandung hampir setiap hari. Kami terpaksa akur kerana ketakutan dan bimbang dipukul dan dibelasah mereka.
“Selepas puas ‘menjamah’ tubuh kami, mereka menjadikan kami pelacur dengan memanggil saudara-mara terdekat termasuk warga asing untuk melakukan hubungan seks di rumah sendiri,” katanya ketika hadir di pejabat Harian Metro di sini, bersama rakannya.
Wani yang juga anak bongsu keluarga itu berkata, ibunya mengugut akan meminum racun jika mereka enggan menjadi pelacur dan memberi alasan wang itu digunakan untuk menyara kehidupan keluarga.
“Selepas tiga tahun menjadi pelacur ketika berusia 15 tahun, saya mengalami sakit teruk kerana melayan terlalu ramai lelaki dan mengambil keputusan berhenti seketika.
“Namun, saya dan kakak lain seolah-olah dipukau kerana akur dan dengan rela menuruti segala kemahuan ibu tanpa sebarang bantahan,” katanya.
Menurutnya, dia berjumpa seorang bomoh dan sembuh selepas berubat sebelum berkahwin pada 2004.
“Namun, walaupun sudah berkahwin dan mempunyai seorang anak serta menetap di tempat lain, saya masih diganggu keluarga dengan pelbagai ugutan yang mahukan saya kembali ke rumah dan menjadi pelacur.
“Perkara itu berlarutan selama beberapa tahun sehinggalah berlakunya peristiwa pada pertengahan tahun lalu apabila abang kandung serta ayah saudara menceroboh rumah sewa dan mengambil gambar bogel saya ketika sedang mandi,” katanya.
Wani berkata, keluarganya kemudian mengugut akan menyebarkan gambar bogel itu di sekitar Johor termasuk dalam Internet jika dia enggan pulang ke rumah dan menuruti kehendak mereka.
“Selepas kejadian itu, saya nekad meninggalkan anak serta suami dengan melarikan diri sehelai sepinggang ke Kuala Lumpur dan mendapat perlindungan di Persatuan Pergerakan Wanita (Awam) di Petaling Jaya.
“Sejak 2004, saya membuat lapan laporan iaitu enam di Johor Bharu dan dua di Ibu pejabat Polis Bukit Aman, baru-baru ini untuk memastikan keselamatan diri selepas menerima ugutan secara berterusan daripada keluarga,” katanya.
Sehubungan itu, dia berharap pihak berkuasa meneliti kes ini bagi memastikan keselamatannya dan membolehkannya kembali ke pangkuan suami dan anak.

Create and send your own message on iGoogle
A new feature of iGoogle enables anyone to send and update personal messages through gadgets on the iGoogle homepage. You can choose from seven gadget types: Photo Album, Google Gram, The Daily Me, Free Form, YouTube Channel, Personal List, and Countdown. Either send your gadgets to selected friends and family, or share them with everyone on the public directory of iGoogle gadgets.

Search across all content with new universal search effort
In striving to give you the best results to your search queries, we've found that the best information can take many different forms. For this reason, we have taken the beginning steps towards a new universal search effort that provides a more holistic search experience on Google. Until recently, you could find the best results for your searches within the separate and distinct Google properties ( e.g., web, images, maps, videos, books) by clicking a link above the search box. Using a universal search approach, Google technology searches across all of the content sources, integrates, and then ranks the results for the best answers. So depending on your search query, you may see results from news, images, videos, local, or books integrated with the web search results. We also introduced new contextual navigational links so that you can click to see more results from a suggested type of content. And we've added a new Google navigation bar to the top of the page to provide easier navigation to Google's products.

Sneak a peek with Street View
Street View gives you navigable 360-degree street-level imagery in Google Maps for selected cities. You can see images for a spot and take virtual walks along that street. So when you're trying to find the perfect outdoor cafe for lunch with friends or want a glimpse of the neighborhood you're considering moving to, use Google Maps to see what the spot actually looks like, as if you were right there in person. Currently Street View imagery is available for the San Francisco Bay Area, New York City, Las Vegas, Miami, and Denver; and we expect to launch this feature in many more cities soon. Click on the "Street View" tab at the top of the Google Maps page or follow the demo link in the left panel.

In addition to the searching the full text of more than a million book titles, you can now find information on even more books using Google Book Search. Millions of metadata records have been added to the index, which means you can find images of book covers, summaries and references for even more titles in Google book results. We've also added new information to the "About this book" page so that now, in addition to basic information about the book like title and author, you'll also see reviews and references to the book from web pages as well as other books.

Find your next appointment on your phone
Google Calendar is now available for mobile devices. Just point your phone's browser to calendar.google.com, and you'll immediately access your day's agenda, complete with details like date, time, location, description, and guest list.

MISCELLANY
The Google Channel on YouTube
Much has been made of the 'YouTube' phenomenon, which has emerged thanks to relatively inexpensive and easy to operate video cameras, faster computers with more storage space (to hold all that footage) and easy uploading. The creativity and fun factor are worth celebrating -- but don't lose sight of online video's ability to show, tell, teach, and share information quickly. Increasingly, businesses are showcasing their products, promoting their initiatives and exposing their employees via video. You may learn something or you may dislike the marketing messages, but either way, better get used to it - corporate use of popular online video channels is here to stay. In Google's case, we've chosen to share quite a few talks by technology gurus and popular authors, conversations with presidential candidates (all of whom we've invited to visit our Mountain View campus), and other presentations and product demonstrations -- and we're adding more material all the time. Enjoy the view.
